Curing Hormonal Hair Loss In Women

If you are a women and losing your hair it could be due to a hormonal imbalance. The female hormone estrogen is the hormone that makes a female, a female. The female also produces a quantity of the male hormone testosterone. The female hormone estrogen will keep this hormone, testosterone, in check.

So when the female hormone estrogen is reduced, testosterone is allowed to roam free and to develop DHT (dihydrotestosterone). So what is wrong with DHT? Well it is the hormone that is linked to causing hair loss in both men and women.

DHT is formed in both men and women when the testosterone hormone combines with the enzyme, 5 alpha reductase. These combine to form DHT. The hormone DHT will then attach itself to a hair follicle. When this happens, the nutrition needed for the hair follicle and the hair strand is effectively blocked. Eventually the hair strand will fall out and the follicle will wither and die.

So to prevent hair loss in women, it is essential that they keep their estrogen at the proper levels. Two ways a woman can have her estrogen levels reduced is through taking birth control pills and menopause.

Birth Control Pills - If you are taking birth control pills and are losing your hair, it could be because of the pill you are taking. The pill you are taking could be forcing your hair to grow faster and putting it in its resting phase faster. If this is the case, then there is no problem and your hair will grow back.

But if your family has a history of pattern baldness, you have a higher chance of losing your hair. See your doctor about getting a pill that has a low-androgen index. Or you can ask for a non-hormonal birth control pill.

Menopause - During menopause and after, your estrogen level is reduced allowing testosterone to develop DHT. The key here is to attack the DHT. Minoxidil, Federal Drug Administration approved medicine to stop hair loss, is believed to attack the hair follicle by strengthening the blood vessels to the follicle, thereby allowing nutrients to get to the follicle.

Some men are said to also lose hair due to hormonal imbalance, too. But when it is found to be caused by the male hormone testosterone, which is the male hormone that makes a man, a man, I would not say that men lose their hair due to an imbalance. I would call it by its common name, male pattern baldness.

Conclusion - Two conditions can cause women to lose their hair due to hormonal imbalance, birth control pills and menopause. See your doctor to help you determine what is causing you to lose your hair.
